Meet Dr. Mohamed
E. Sharaby, MD

Dr. Mohamed E. Sharaby is a dual board-certified ophthalmologist and neurologist whose path to becoming one of Tampa Bay's premier glaucoma and cataract surgeons reflects an extraordinary commitment to subspecialty mastery across multiple disciplines of medicine.

Dr. Sharaby began his medical training with an internship year at the University of South Florida in Tampa (2009–2010), the city he would ultimately return to call home. He then completed a Neurology Residency at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) (2010–2013), followed by a Neurocritical Care Fellowship at the University of Virginia (2013–2014) — building an unparalleled foundation in neuro-ophthalmic and critical care medicine.

Driven by a passion for surgical eye care, Dr. Sharaby went on to complete his Ophthalmology Residency at the University of South Carolina — Palmetto Health Ophthalmology (now Prisma Health) (2014–2017). He subsequently served as Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Florida College of Medicine (2018–2019), mentoring the next generation of eye surgeons while maintaining an active surgical practice.

The pinnacle of his surgical training came with a Surgical Glaucoma Fellowship at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA (2020–2021) — one of the most prestigious ophthalmic training programs in the world — where he mastered the full spectrum of advanced glaucoma surgery including MIGS (iStent, Hydrus, OMNI/Goniotomy), trabeculectomy, and tube shunt implantation, as well as premium refractive cataract surgery with multifocal, EDOF, and toric intraocular lenses.

Returning to Tampa in 2021, Dr. Sharaby practiced within larger group settings before recognizing a gap in the personalized, patient-first care he believed every person deserved. In 2023, he founded Bay Area Eye Surgery Institute — built on the conviction that exceptional subspecialty surgical care should come with genuine attention, unhurried consultations, and a physician who knows your name.

Outside of the operating room, Dr. Sharaby is an avid tennis player, scuba diver, boater, and beach enthusiast. He enjoys cooking and shares his home with his beloved cats. These passions keep him grounded and remind him daily of what his patients are working to protect — the vision to experience life fully.

Dr. Sharaby conducts consultations in English and Arabic, and holds medical-level Spanish proficiency — ensuring clear, compassionate communication with Tampa Bay's diverse patient community.
